Process Skid Design & Layout for Oil & Gas | KHAAS

Process skid design begins with a layout that makes the package practical to operate, maintain, fabricate and install. In oil and gas plants, fitting equipment into a compact footprint must be balanced with piping flexibility, access and the supplier’s installation requirements.

KHAAS Design & Engineering supports process skid layout development, equipment coordination and detailed drawings for oil and gas packages. This article focuses on the decisions made before the layout is released for analysis and fabrication.

What is a process skid layout?

A process skid layout defines where equipment, piping, valves, instruments and structural supports sit within the package. It also establishes battery-limit connections, installation clearances and the relationship between the skid and the surrounding plant.

A general arrangement is more than an equipment placement drawing: it records dimensions and interfaces that other disciplines need to complete their work.

Start with the process and vendor requirements

Review approved P&IDs, equipment data sheets, line lists and vendor general arrangements. Confirm nozzle orientations, equipment support points, valve access, instrument installation requirements and the intended operating sequence with the responsible disciplines.

Capture transport envelopes and site installation limits early. A layout that fits the plant may still require revision if it cannot be shipped or lifted as planned.

Process skid layout methodology

  1. Set package boundaries, tie-in coordinates and the available footprint.

  2. Position major equipment using vendor dimensions and maintenance envelopes.

  3. Route piping with space for supports, insulation, flange access and thermal movement.

  4. Coordinate instruments, electrical interfaces and operating access with the responsible teams.

  5. Review the layout in 3D with the structural and piping engineers.

  6. Issue the coordinated general arrangement with controlled revisions and open-item tracking.

Maintenance and operability checks

Allow space to remove motors, pump internals, filters and other serviceable components. Check valve reach, lifting access and the clearance needed to undo flanges or withdraw bolts.

Review drainage, venting and access routes with the process and safety teams. Required hazardous-area classifications and safety clearances come from the approved project basis and discipline studies.

Oil and gas package layouts

Common applications include pump and transfer skids, filtration packages, separation equipment, chemical injection packages and metering systems.

Each arrangement has different priorities. A filter skid needs element-removal space; a pump package needs machinery maintenance access; a metering package must accommodate the selected meter’s installation requirements.

Coordinate the layout with structural analysis

Equipment positions determine frame load paths and the package center of gravity. Pipe routing affects support reactions and thermal movement. Share layout changes with the structural and piping stress teams before finalizing drawings.

For the analysis workflow, see process skid engineering for oil and gas.

Layout deliverables and review milestones

The agreed scope may include a 3D coordination model, general arrangement, equipment and nozzle coordinates, maintenance envelopes, support locations and an interface register. Review milestones should distinguish preliminary layouts from information approved for fabrication.

A clash-free model still needs an engineering review for access, installation sequence and operating practicality.

Process skid layout FAQs

How compact should a process skid be?

As compact as the process, maintenance and installation requirements reasonably allow. Reducing footprint can create access problems or increase piping complexity.

What happens when vendor dimensions change?

Review affected piping, supports, clearances and transport limits. Update the model and drawings together, and communicate any revised interface loads.
