Modular Skid Design Services for Global Projects | KHAAS

KHAAS Design & Engineering provides modular skid design services for EPC contractors, package manufacturers and industrial project teams worldwide. Based in Chennai, India, we support projects across India, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Singapore and the USA with coordinated structural and mechanical engineering.

Our scope covers skid base frame analysis, equipment and piping support coordination, lifting and transportation assessments, 3D modelling and fabrication documentation. Each package is developed around the agreed design basis, project specifications and installation requirements.

What Is Modular Skid Design?

A modular skid is a packaged assembly in which equipment, piping and associated components are mounted on a common structural base frame. It is typically fabricated and assembled off-site, then transported to its final location for installation and connection to the plant.

Effective skid design considers operating loads, equipment access, pipe support locations, lifting arrangements, transport limits and foundation interfaces together. This coordination helps reduce site modifications and supports a practical fabrication and installation sequence.

Benefits of a Coordinated Modular Skid Design

  • Reduced site work through off-site fabrication and assembly.

  • Earlier identification of layout clashes and equipment interface issues.

  • Compact arrangements that retain access for operation and maintenance.

  • Defined lifting and transportation arrangements for handling the package.

  • Consistent drawings and documentation for fabrication and installation.

The achievable cost and schedule benefits depend on package complexity, procurement, fabrication quality and site conditions.

Our Modular Skid Engineering Scope

We develop the engineering scope around the package requirements and agreed project design basis.

Structural Design and Analysis

  • Skid base frame, equipment supports and steel connection design.

  • Operating, empty, test and maintenance load assessments, as applicable.

  • Lifting, road or sea transportation and handling assessments.

  • Wind, seismic, vibration, buckling and blast assessments where specified.

  • Anchor bolt, lifting lug, pad eye and spreader beam design within the agreed scope.

Mechanical Engineering and Piping Coordination

  • Piping layout and support coordination using approved process inputs.

  • Pipe stress analysis and equipment nozzle load assessment.

  • Pressure vessel, tank and heat exchanger engineering where required.

  • 3D models, general arrangement drawings and fabrication details.

Applicable codes, load combinations and client requirements are confirmed for each project. Operator specifications and approval requirements are addressed where they form part of the contract.

Industries and Project Applications

Our modular skid engineering services support oil and gas, petrochemical, power, water treatment and industrial plant projects. We work with EPC contractors, OEMs, package suppliers and fabricators that need coordinated structural and mechanical design support.

Typical requirements include new packages, modifications to existing skid frames, equipment integration, transport assessments and fabrication drawing development.

Types of Skid Packages We Support

  • Compressor and air-cooled chiller packages.

  • Pump, chemical injection and dosing skids.

  • Metering and process utility packages.

  • Water treatment, RO and filtration skids.

  • Heat exchanger and associated equipment packages.

  • Deluge and firewater skid structures.

The scope may cover an individual base frame or a coordinated package design, depending on the supplied inputs and project requirements.

Modular Skid Design Methodology

Our design workflow connects the project requirements with analysis, detailing and coordinated engineering submissions. The stages and checks are tailored to the agreed package scope.

1. Review Inputs and Establish the Design Basis

Review the client specifications, general arrangement, equipment datasheets, weights, centres of gravity and available piping information. Confirm the project location, applicable codes, material grades, load cases, acceptance criteria and document requirements. Record missing inputs and assumptions for client resolution.

2. Develop the Layout and Structural Arrangement

Coordinate equipment positions, skid dimensions, support spacing and piping routes. Consider operation and maintenance access, lifting points, transport constraints and foundation interfaces before developing the structural model.

3. Define Loads and Analyse the Skid Frame

Establish the relevant empty, operating, test and maintenance conditions together with equipment and piping reactions. Assess the specified lifting, transport, wind, seismic and dynamic conditions. Review strength, stability, deflection and support reactions against the agreed design criteria.

4. Coordinate Mechanical and Piping Interfaces

Coordinate pipe stress results, support loads, thermal movements and equipment nozzle limits where included in the scope. Feed revised interface loads back into the structural design and resolve clashes through model and drawing reviews.

5. Design Connections and Handling Details

Develop member connections, welds, bolted joints, base plates, anchors and lifting details for the applicable design situations. Coordinate the lifting arrangement, sling geometry and package centre of gravity with the approved handling requirements.

6. Prepare and Check Engineering Deliverables

Prepare calculation reports, general arrangement drawings, fabrication details and material schedules. Carry out discipline checks and cross-check consistency between calculations, models and drawings before submission.

7. Address Review Comments and Control Revisions

Track client and fabrication review comments, resolve technical queries and issue revisions with clear document status. Assess changes to equipment, loads or layout for their effect on the design before finalising the agreed engineering package.

Engineering Deliverables and Project Coordination

Depending on the agreed scope, deliverables can include:

  • Design basis and structural calculation reports.

  • Pipe stress reports and support load schedules.

  • General arrangement and 3D coordination models.

  • Steel fabrication, connection and lifting detail drawings.

  • Material take-offs or bills of materials.

  • Responses to client review comments and agreed drawing revisions.

Our team coordinates equipment data, structural details and piping interfaces to help fabricators work from a consistent engineering package. Submission stages, review cycles and document formats are agreed at the start of the project.

India-Based Engineering Support for Global Projects

KHAAS Design & Engineering supports clients in India, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Singapore, the USA and other international markets. Our Chennai-based team can coordinate remotely with client engineers, EPC teams and fabrication partners.

For each assignment, we confirm the project location, applicable design codes, units, environmental loads and documentation requirements. Engineering submissions are prepared for the agreed client review process.
