Process Skid Engineering for Oil & Gas | KHAAS

Process skid engineering translates approved process requirements into coordinated calculations, models and drawings. For oil and gas facilities, that means resolving how equipment, piping, supports and the steel frame behave together during operation, testing, lifting and transport.

KHAAS Design & Engineering provides structural analysis and detailed engineering support for process skid packages. The scope is agreed around the owner’s design basis and equipment supplier information, with clear responsibility for each discipline.

From process requirements to an engineered package

The process design establishes service conditions and equipment duties. Package engineering then coordinates the physical arrangement and structural interfaces. P&IDs, piping specifications, equipment dimensions, nozzle loads and maintenance requirements are key inputs.

Keeping a register of assumptions and vendor information avoids treating preliminary data as final fabrication instructions.

Structural analysis methodology

  1. Define the applicable codes, design criteria, materials and support conditions.

  2. Build an analysis model that represents the actual load paths and stiffness.

  3. Apply equipment weights, piping reactions, environmental actions and the agreed temporary load cases.

  4. Assess member strength, stability, connections and deflection.

  5. Coordinate any machinery vibration assessment with vendor excitation data and foundation stiffness.

  6. Document governing cases, limitations and reactions for downstream design.

Operating, test, lifting and transport cases

Hydrotest contents may produce a different weight distribution from normal operation. Lifting creates concentrated reactions at lifting points, while road or marine transport may introduce inertia loads and temporary restraints.

Analyze the combinations required by the project rather than combining unrelated maxima indiscriminately. Record the assumed center of gravity, sling geometry, restraint arrangement and temporary support locations.

Piping and machinery interfaces

Pipe support stiffness and movement affect both piping and steelwork. Coordinate support reactions and displacement limits with pipe stress analysis, and check vendor limits at equipment nozzles.

For rotating or reciprocating machinery, obtain operating speeds, excitation forces and acceptance criteria before selecting a dynamic assessment. See our compressor skid package design article for related considerations.

Engineering deliverables for fabrication

  • Design basis and structural calculation report.

  • Coordinated general arrangement and 3D model.

  • Base-frame, equipment-support and connection details.

  • Lifting and transport details within the agreed scope.

  • Material take-off and foundation interface reactions.

  • Responses to review comments and fabrication queries.

Drawing revisions should remain aligned with the analysis assumptions and latest approved vendor data.

Quality reviews and change control

Review model geometry, load inputs and critical connections before issuing drawings. Changes to equipment weight, support positions, piping reactions or lifting arrangements can require recalculation.

A clear interface register helps the EPC contractor, package supplier, fabricator and foundation designer track responsibilities and resolve outstanding information.

Process skid engineering FAQs

Is finite element analysis needed for every component?

No. Select an appropriate method for the geometry and behavior being assessed. Detailed local models may be useful where simpler methods cannot adequately represent the connection or load introduction.

Can engineering start with preliminary equipment data?

Yes, with documented assumptions and defined hold points. Final fabrication release should reflect the approved equipment and interface data.
